However, not every caravan matting is the same. There are different sizes and styles for every budget. It’s also important to ensure that they are caravan site approved before you spend hundreds of dollars on outdoor flooring.

Great caravan annex flooring is made from breathable materials and should be UV resistant at a bare minimum. Not every matting is approved by caravan parks but you can rest assured that all of the products in this guide are.

Made in Australia, CGear Multi Mats are very high quality.

The smallest version is 1.8m x 2.4m while the largest is 2.4m x 7.5m. With a total of eight different variations, you should be able to find a size that suits your setup.

The CGear matting for your caravan annex is highly advanced. It doesn’t matter which size you buy, they all boast the same quality features that make this the best annex matting on the market.

According to CGear, the Multimat was as originally designed as a helimat to protect against flying debris. They realized that it had the capabilities to offer a lot to the camping community.

It’s semi-permeable so dirt and grit just fall through. Furthermore, the caravan matting is non-absorbent so you don’t have to deal with it retaining rainwater. UV stabilizers also reduce the risk of sun damage.

Their annex matting is reversible which is a nice touch so you can choose between green or grey depending on your setting and personal taste. CGear knows their market.

If there’s an issue, it’s the price. There are far cheaper mats on the market that have similar capabilities even if they’re not as advanced. They come with a one-year warranty.

Camec Annex Matting

Another popular Australian brand, Camec makes great annex matting.

Their caravan annex flooring wasn’t designed for helicopters, but trust us, it does the job well. It comes in five different sizes which is still a decent variety. The smallest is 3.0m x 2.5m while the largest is 7.0m x 2.5m.

It’s extremely easy to clean. Just hose it down and watch the debris roll-off. Like the CGear mats, it’s UV stabilized and rot-proof. Furthermore, it has a non-slip finish so you’ll never lose your footing. It goes well under your caravan awning or with your privacy screen.

Breathable fabric ensures that this matting doesn’t damage the grass underneath. It’s also got pegging holes so that you can pin it down and not worry about the wind blowing your matting away. Like most mats, it comes with a carry bag.

Finally, it’s more economical than the CGear alternative. The range starts at about $60 but their most expensive option is just $120. That’s less than the smallest CGear mat with the same one-year warranty!

Outback Explorer Multi-Purpose Matting

Outback Explorer’s range of annex matting comes in either grey or green.

These products are more basic than the previous instalments in this guide, but they will do the job. If you’re looking for a cheaper option then this is the one for you. That’s because this range of caravan annex flooring starts at under $50.

The largest comes in at about $100 with a one-year warranty so it’s by far one of the most reasonably priced product in this category. They are also easy to clean and grass-friendly with a breathable mesh structure.

Sizes go from 2.5m x 3m to 2.5m x 6m. However, if you want anything bigger, you’ll have to get one from a different manufacturer.

However, there are a few issues that may make you think twice about buying this caravan matting.

Firstly, Outback Explorer doesn’t say if they are UV resistant, which is a red flag. This is important in Australia, as UV damage can really impact the useful lifetime of many products.

Also, these mats are weighted but there is no extra way to secure the caravan annex matting to the floor.

All in all, this is a decent product at a lower cost but by no means the best annex matting. 

Weisshorn Annex Floor Mat

This non-slip annex floor mat by Weisshorn is excellent. It’s durable and UV-treated so you can rest assured that it will last for a long time. Also, Weisshorn claims that because it’s weighted no pegs are required.

Made from breathable PVC, it’s mould and mildew resistant. It also comes with a carry bag so you can easily stow your caravan annex away when you’re not using it.

Their standard mats retail from about $70 for a 3m x 2.5m mat to $110 for 6.25m x 2.5m matting. They also have a more expensive heavy-duty line that offers all of the same benefits except that it’s longer-lasting and stronger.

This caravan annex matting also comes with a one-year warranty. 

Final Thoughts

There are many caravan annex flooring available but some are undoubtedly better than others.

The best annex matting is the CGear range. Its advanced features and design make it a premium product. However, the price reflects this and may be prohibitive for a lot of people.

If you don’t want to spend that much then I recommend either the Camec or Weisshorn ranges of annex matting. They cost roughly the same amount with similar benefits. It’s just a matter of standing on both of them and deciding which you prefer.

It’s advisable to ensure that caravan parks will allow you to use your annex matting before you place it down (they typically request 'grass friendly' matting). They won’t want you to leave a sweaty yellow patch of grass behind. So check that the unit you are thinking of going for is made from breathable materials.

Also, UV resistance is important because we get a lot of sunshine down under. Some mats don’t have this feature and their lifespan will be shorter.

The mats can also make for a nice, stable base for your caravan steps, which is very useful. No more balancing on top of your steps on muddy, soft ground!
